Uses of State Bank Of India IFSC Code

An IFSC code is a unique code which represents the branch of the bank in India. It stands for Indian Financial System Code. Having 11 characters, it is a combination of English alphabets and numbers. The English alphabets usually represent the name of the bank. The general format of IFSC code is ABCD1234567. The first part which consists of alphabetical characters is known as bank code and the second part which is usually numbers is known as branch code.

Where IFSC Code is used?

Assigned by the Reserve Bank of India, IFSC code is used for several banking purposes especially for money transfer online and offline. The code is used to identify each bank that participates in Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) and Centralised Funds Management System (CFMS).

For transferring money to another bank account using online banking through RTGS or NEFT, you will have to add the bank details of the beneficiary including account number, name and IFSC Code of the branch where the person maintains the account. Only after the IFSC code is verified, you can send fund to the person you intend to do the transaction.

All the banks are advised to print the IFSC code of the branch on cheques issued to the customers.
